8/6/1920Film Censor Board at Bombay started working. The first film censored and granted a Censor Certificate No. 1 was a short film of 600 ft., produced by Gaumont Company and it was titled as 'Gaumont Graphic No. 963-964'. The Regional Film Censor Boards were also set-up in Calcutta, Madras and Rangoon.
4/7/1942Anandshankar Bapubhai Dhruv, famous Gujarati expert, Sanskrit Pandit and editor of a monthly magzine, died.
12/8/1922Hari Prasad Sharma, cricket Test umpire for 3 tests from 1974-77, was born at Delhi.
12/8/1922Amir Timur of Timur Lang invaded India with 92 squadrons of horses and 90,000 cavalry and reached the banks of Sindhu river near Atak city (now in Pakistan). He then attacked Delhi because its Muslim Sultanate was too tolerant of Hindu idolatry. A Mongolian follower of Sufism, he was one of the most ruthless of all conquerors. Timur crossed the Indus River at Attock (now in Pakistan) on 24 September 1398.
1/18/1936Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936), famous English writer and author, died in Burwash, England at 70. He was a young journalist in British India. He wrote in verses, stories, novels childen's stories some of these were ""The Jungle Book, Kim and Just-50 stories"" and was honoured with the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907 for 'Kim' (Indian based story).
10/21/1906Gandhiji went to England till Nov 30 on deputation to present Indians' case to Colonial Secretary.

8/10/1927Manali Kallat Vainu Bappu, first Indian astronomer, litterateur and Urdu poet, was born at Madras.

8/30/1983Indian National Satellite (INSAT-1B) launched. This was also a multi-purpose communication and meteorology satellite, which served for more than its design life of seven years. It was launched by a US Space Shuttle.
